The Maritime Research Division (MRD) at the SC Institute for Archaeology and Anthropology studies and manages the immense archaeological heritage found beneath the rivers and coastal waters of South Carolina. The mission of the Maritime Research Division is to preserve and protect South Carolina’s maritime archaeological heritage through research, management, and public interaction. MRD maintains a database of over 500 underwater archaeological sites that include shipwrecks, abandoned vessels, prehistoric or historic scatter sites, boat landings, shipyards and other structures and sites for research and compliance purposes.
